Art. Motion. Mud. Water. Glory.

Register to Race

The Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Sculpture Race is open to anyone with a human-powered, all-terrain art machine and the nerve to pilot it over road, sand, mud, and water. Getting your team to the starting line takes six steps. Start here.

Six Steps to the Starting Line

Do these in any order you like; we just need all of them done by October 2nd. Nothing is gated behind anything else.

1. Start here

Anyone can race: all ages, any level of engineering hubris. Your machine must be human-powered, all-terrain, and able to float. Entry is $26 per team. Everything below is due by October 2nd; the race runs October 3 & 4.

2. Read the rules

The rules cover safety gear, machine requirements, and the fine art of the mud pit. Download and print a copy for the build shop.

3. Register your team

One form per team. Tell us your team name, your theme, your pilots and crew. Takes about ten minutes.

4. Sign the waiver

Every participant signs one: pilots, pit crew, everybody. Under 18 needs a parent or guardian signature.

5. Pay your entry fee

$26 per team member ( pilots and crew ), paid online through Square or by cash or check on Registration Day. No gate, no order; just have it done by October 2nd. Use your team name at checkout so we can match you up.

6. What happens next

We’ll confirm your registration by email once your form, waivers, and fee are all in. Then: the Meet and Greet on Friday night, brake test and safety check on Saturday afternoon, and you’re off. The full weekend is on the Race page.

Creating a Team

Every machine has a theme and a crew. One registration covers the whole team; here’s who you’ll need and how old they have to be.

Pilots (14 yrs+)

Pilots power and steer the sculpture around the entire course: road, sand, mud, and water.

Pit Crew (12 yrs+)

Pit crew transforms the machine between elements and fixes whatever breaks. Something always breaks.

Support Crew (12 yrs+)

Support crew does whatever the team needs to reach glory: hauling, cheering, snack logistics.

Team Captain (18 yrs+)

One adult who registers the team, wrangles the waivers, and is our point of contact.

Barnacles (12 yrs+)

Optional non-powering passengers carried aboard on a purpose-built seat, for style points.

Adults (18 yrs+)

At least one actual adult must be on the machine or traveling with it whenever it is on the course.

Under 18? All participants under 18 must wear a helmet on the course, and every machine needs at least one adult on board or traveling with it.

No Machine? Join a Team

Plenty of teams need extra pilots, pit crew, and support crew. Tell us a little about yourself and we’ll match you with a team that needs you.

Sponsor a Team

Cover a team’s entry fee, materials, or mud-recovery snacks. It’s a ridiculous and glorious way to put your name on the water.
